Some common questions about starting therapy

  • You might benefit from therapy if you're experiencing persistent feelings of distress, anxiety, or sadness that interfere with your daily life. Other signs include difficulty managing stress, changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawing from relationships, or feeling overwhelmed by life's challenges.

Sometimes, specific events like relationship problems, trauma, or major life transitions can trigger the need for professional support. Remember that seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness, and you don't need to be in crisis to benefit from talking with a mental health professional.

  • The duration of therapy varies widely depending on your specific needs, goals, and the issues you're addressing. Some clients find significant relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.

At Emerge Center, we take a collaborative approach, regularly evaluating progress and adjusting our treatment plan accordingly. My aim is to provide you with effective tools and strategies that eventually enable you to continue your growth independently, without ongoing therapy.

  • Yes, therapy is confidential, and I take your privacy very seriously. The information shared during our sessions is protected by professional ethics and law.

However, there are some specific situations where confidentiality must be broken: if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, suspicion of abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or in rare cases when required by court order. I will always discuss these limitations with you during our first session and answer any questions you may have about privacy.

  • Online therapy (telehealth) takes place through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform that works similarly to a video call. You'll need a device with internet access, a camera, and a microphone, plus a private, quiet space where you can speak freely.

Before your first session, you'll receive a link to join our virtual waiting room. No special software needs to be downloaded. If technical issues arise, we have backup plans in place to ensure your session can continue by phone if necessary.

  • Yes, research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most mental health concerns. Many clients appreciate the convenience and comfort of connecting from their own space, and some even find it easier to open up when in familiar surroundings.

Online therapy eliminates travel time, provides flexibility for those with busy schedules, and allows access to care regardless of mobility limitations or geographic distance. I use the same evidence-based techniques in online sessions that I would use in person.

  • Your first session will focus on getting to know each other and establishing a foundation for our work together. I'll ask questions about what brings you to therapy, your history, current challenges, and goals. This is also your opportunity to ask questions about my approach and experience.

We'll discuss practical matters like confidentiality, scheduling, and payment policies. The initial consultation helps us determine if we're a good fit for working together and begins the process of developing a personalized treatment plan. Many people find that even this first conversation brings some clarity and relief.
